Local Attractions

Saxmundham is located in the centre of the Heritage Coast region of Suffolk, which means there are a number of attractions in the area, especially for those who love nature.

Take a drive away from the main town and there are a number of heritage sites on the coast line. You can witness the area's history, view some of the nature reserves and areas of outstanding natural beauty, and even visit some of the nearby seaside resorts.

Sutton Hoo Ship Burial Site: This site, located nearby to Saxmundham, has recently been opened by the National Trust and is one of the top attractions in the area. As well as witnessing some important archaeological finds, you can enjoy walks, a restaurant and visitor gallery.

RSBP: The main visitor centre for the RSPB is located at Minsmere, near Saxmundham, as well as a bird reserve. This reserve is a wonderful place for families to visit, and includes a number of beautiful nature trails, as well as the opportunity to see a wide range of bird habitats. You can also hire binoculars if you are interested in seeing some of the birds a little closely.

Snape Maltings: Snape Maltings is a mid 19th century collection of malthouses and granaries that are nearby to Saxmundham, close to the River Alde. They were originally used for malting barley as part of the brewing industry, but stopped in 1960 when this method was uneconomic. However, the malting were restored and there are now shops, a gallery and a concert hall that is home to the yearly Aldeburgh music festival.
